Acciaio (per cemento armato):                             concrete steel
Steel used in reinforced concrete, which should comply with standard specifications for prestressed concrete.

- trave a traliccio:                             lattice girder
An open girder, beam, or column built from members joined and braced by intersecting diagonal bars. Also known as open-web girder.


Cemento armato (c.a) (conglomerato cementizio armato):                    reinforced concrete
Concrete containing reinforcing steel rods or wire mesh.

- Armatura metallica:         concrete steel
Steel used in reinforced concrete, which should comply with standard specifications for prestressed concrete.
- Casseforme:                   formwork
A temporary wooden casing used to contain concrete during its placing and hardening. Also known as shuttering.

- Getto:                                 cast
Any object which is formed by placing a castable substance in a mold or form and allowing it to solidify. Also known as casting.

- Stagionatura:                   curing
A process for bringing freshly placed concrete to required strength and quality by maintaining the humidity and temperature at specified levels for a given period of time. Also known as seasoning.

- Pilastro:                             pilaster, column, pillar
A vertical rectangular architectural member that is structurally a pier and architecturally a column.

- Trave:                                 beam
A body, with one dimension large compared with the other dimensions, whose function is to carry lateral loads (perpendicular to the large dimension) and bending movements.

- Solaio:                                 floor
The bottom, horizontal surface of an enclosed space.


Fondazione  :                   foundation
1 The ground that supports a building or other structure.
2 The portion of a structure which transmits the building load to the ground.

A continuous footing that supports an entire structure, such as a floor. Also known as foundation mat.

A vertical post or pile which carries the weight of a foundation, transmitting the load of a structure to the bedrock or subsoil without detrimental settlement.

A reinforced concrete slab placed directly on the ground to provide the foundation for the superstructure.

A footing that consists of two or more tiers of closely spaced structural steel beams resting on a concrete block, each tier being at right angles to the one below.

A footing that supports a concentrated load, such as a single column.

- f. a platea:                                 mat foundation
A large, thick, usually reinforced concrete mat which transfers loads from a number of columns, or columns and walls, to the underlying rock or soil. Also known as raft foundation.

- f. su pali:                                     pile foundation
A substructure supported on piles.

 


Legno:                                 wood
Lumber or timber obtained from trees.

-lamellare:                             glulam
A material fabricated by joining two or more layers of wood with an adhesive so that the grains of all the layers are approximately parallel.

- Capriata:                             roof truss
A truss used in roof construction; it carries the weight of roof deck and framing and of wind loads on the upper chord; an example is a Fink truss.

- Capriata semplice:             king post truss
A wooden roof truss having two principal rafters held by a horizontal tie beam, a king post upright between tie beam and ridge, and usually two struts to the rafters from a thickening at the king post foot.

 


Muratura:                                     masonry
A construction of stone or similar materials such as concrete or brick.

- mattone o blocco forato:             building block
A hollow block, either of burned clay or concrete, used in constructing the walls of buildings, and often faced with brick or stone.

- blocco ad "A":                             A block
A hollow concrete masonry block with one end closed and the other open and with a web between, so that when the block is laid in a wall two cells are produced.

- laterizio:                                     structural tile
A hollow clay product which may be load-bearing or non-load-bearing; used for facing, flooring, or partitions.

- m. in pietra da taglio:                    ashlar
Masonry with an exposed side of square or rectangular stones.

A structure or the part of a structure built of stone.

- m. in calcestruzzo:                        concrete masonry
Building units composed of block, brick, or tile laid by masons.

A partition which supports a vertical load.

- Muro divisorio:                            division wall
A wall used to create major subdivisions in a building.

- Parete divisoria:                            partition
An interior wall having a height of one story or less, which divides a structure into sections.

 


Solaio:                                                 floor

- solaio prefabbricato:                      lift-slab construction
Pouring reinforced concrete roof and floor slabs at ground level, then lifting them into position after hardening.

Floor joists together with their strutting and supports.

A floor system in which a concrete floor slab is supported by reinforced concrete beams.



Tetto:                                         roof
The cover of a building or similar structure.

A flat roof that slopes in one direction and may lean against another wall or building. Also known as lean-to roof.

- tetto piano:                                flat roof
A roof pitched only enough to allow water to drain off.

- tetto a padiglione:                     hip roof
A roof having four slopes; the two shorter ends are triangular.

- tetto a botte:                                barrel roof
A roof of semicylindrical section; capable of spanning long distances parallel to the axis of the cylinder.

- tetto piano non praticabile:    deck roof
A roof that is nearly flat and without parapet walls.

- tetto a due falde su timpano:         gable roof
A sloping peaked roof that forms a gable at each end.
